Boniface Mwangi, Agather Recount Harrowing Ordeal in Tanzania, Vow Legal Action
Activists Boniface Mwangi and Agather have recounted their harrowing ordeal of abduction, torture, and sexual abuse in Tanzania. They were blindfolded, drugged, and dumped at the Kenya border. The two now plan to sue the Tanzanian government for the inhumane treatment.
Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan human rights defender Agather have opened up about their horrifying abduction and abuse in Tanzania, describing incidents of psychological torture, sexual violence, and physical mistreatment during their illegal detention. The two were separated and transferred to unknown locations on Tuesday morning under harsh conditions.
Agather shared chilling details of their captivity, saying she feared for her life during long, disorienting drives where she imagined being fed to animals or dumped into the ocean. Boniface recalled being verbally abused and denied basic comfort, with tea and mandazi given only after hours of isolation. Painkillers were administered while they endured severe torture.
Both activists were eventually dumped near the Kenya-Tanzania border, with Mwangi handed Tsh.20,000 and Ksh.400 for transport. Agather accused Faustine Mafwele of ordering the assault and condemned the impunity of public officials who subjected them to brutal treatment without fear of consequences.
Expressing gratitude to East Africans for rallying behind their cause, Agather emphasized, “We are alive because of you.” The duo now plan to sue the Tanzanian government, calling out the regime’s lawlessness and the culture of using sexual violence as a weapon against dissent.
