Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused the Kenya Kwanza government of engaging in state capture and attempting to cripple independent oversight institutions through intimidation. Speaking at the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) seminar in Mombasa on May 23, Kalonzo praised Auditor General Nancy Gathungu and Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o for their unwavering courage in the face of executive pressure.
Kalonzo applauded the two for exposing massive irregularities in government spending, calling them incorruptible and true national heroes. “They are the only clean offices left in this administration,” he said, urging ICPAK members to stand by them as they battle systemic interference. He likened their stand to biblical righteousness, quoting Proverbs to emphasize their moral strength.
Nyakang’o’s tenure has been marred by threats, legal charges, and political pushback, including her 2023 arrest and claims of being coerced to authorize suspicious multi-billion shilling payments. She recently exposed questionable county expenditures totaling over Ksh13 billion, triggering backlash from political figures.
Gathungu, too, has faced intense scrutiny after revealing procurement flaws at the Social Health Authority and highlighting losses of over Ksh5.7 billion in donor-funded projects. Her office’s budget was slashed by Ksh270 million, a move widely seen as retaliation for her bold reporting.
