Karua Promises Free Education from Nursery to University if Elected President
Martha Karua has pledged to offer free education from nursery to university if elected president in 2027. She blames the current government for poor priorities and misuse of public funds. Her promise comes as the state plans to scrap the national exam fee waiver.

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has pledged to introduce free education across all levels—nursery to university—if elected president in the 2027 General Election. Speaking during a grassroots tour in Kajiado West on May 24, Karua said her administration would lift the burden of school fees from parents and fund education fully through taxes.

Karua emphasized that most households are struggling to meet education costs, arguing that free education is both possible and necessary if public funds are managed prudently. “Let public wealth be used for the benefit of Kenyans,” she said, promising to prioritize education over what she termed wasteful government spending.

The former Justice Minister took a swipe at the current leadership, accusing it of neglecting ordinary citizens while misusing public resources. “Leadership that destroys public property and uses it as personal property forgets the people’s interests,” she charged.

Her comments come amid government plans to scrap the Ksh5 billion national exam fee waiver from 2026. Treasury CS John Mbadi recently defended the move, saying its unfair for taxpayers to fund exam fees for students in wealthy private schools while many Kenyans struggle to survive.
