Claims of Ghost Workers and Election Interference Spark Political Tensions

Muthwani Member of County Assembly (MCA) Dominic Maitha has threatened to introduce an impeachment motion against Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, citing allegations of corruption, mismanagement, and electoral interference.

Speaking during a bursary issuance event in Ngulalya on March 19, Maitha claimed to have sufficient evidence to push for Wavinya’s removal, warning that she is not above accountability.

"You are not exceptional, and very soon, I will table a motion to impeach you. You are following the same path as former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, who disregarded elected MCAs. You are on your way out," Maitha stated.

Allegations Against Governor Wavinya Ndeti

Maitha accused the governor of several impeachable offenses, including:
Hiring ghost workers, inflating the county wage bill to over KSh 500 million per month.
✔ Allocating KSh 800 million to the Machakos Youth Service project without proper legal justification.
✔ Engaging in nepotism, corruption, and illegal expenditure.

Kinania MCA Francis Kavyu backed Maitha’s claims, alleging that Wavinya is training a political group to manipulate voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.

"Machakos residents deserve better leadership. Corruption and misuse of public funds must be stopped," Kavyu stated.

Political Showdown Looms in Machakos County Assembly

Governor Wavinya, who was elected on a Wiper party ticket in 2022, faces growing pressure from a divided county assembly, comprising:

  • 25 Wiper MCAs
  • 17 Maendeleo Chap Chap MCAs
  • 7 United Democratic Alliance (UDA) MCAs
  • Several independents and members from smaller parties

The brewing impeachment motion has sparked political tension, with leaders from various factions weighing in on the governance of Machakos County.

"We won’t sit idly as the governor silences critics and runs the county without accountability," said Mavoko MP Patrick Makau, who has also criticized Wavinya’s leadership.

Is Wavinya Ndeti Facing the Same Fate as Kawira Mwangaza?

The impeachment threat against Governor Wavinya comes just days after the High Court upheld the Senate’s decision to remove former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Mwangaza was ousted following accusations of constitutional violations, abuse of office, and corruption. She later blamed the Kenya Kwanza government, alleging that her removal was politically orchestrated.

Following her impeachment, her former deputy, Isaac Mutuma, was sworn in as Meru’s fourth governor, promising to restore stability and prioritize youth empowerment.

With mounting pressure in Machakos, all eyes are now on Wavinya Ndeti as she navigates the impeachment threats and defends her administration.
